How to Play the Long Game in Business

by Amanda Abella  - November 24, 2020

Scaling My Company

To scale my company, I needed to make the mind-shift from, ‘Oh my God, I need to survive this next month’ to ‘how do I play the long game? How do I play a sustainable game? How do I make decisions with the long term in mind?’ These are key questions that allowed me to pivot and build my business to what I have today and have given me the resilience and strength to continue to show up in 2020.

I hired Zenya at the end of 2018 as a start to scale my company. Today, my team and I are still building out systems. We’ve added new modules to Persuade To Profit, hired an enrollment team, and to work in our community for our community. Why? Because I’m playing the long game.

I’m thinking more about the bigger picture, bigger vision. What is the strategy? Where’s my business going to be in three years? Based on these questions, I can develop a game plan to build bigger and better scaling.

Challenges with Scaling Your Business

Number one, things will get hard as they inevitably do. Anyone who’s built a business will tell you it’s not the easiest goal to accomplish. It’s not easy at all, but you are more likely to surpass the challenges if you’re thinking long term.

Resilience to Take On Long-Term Challenges

The thing about 2020 is that we’ve experienced this dense energy with massive global challenges on top of our daily challenges that businesses already have to deal with regularly. There’s an extra layer of pressure on business owners that we’ve all felt.

That’s part of the reason why 2020 has been particularly difficult. This year has given us a challenge on top of the challenge on top of the challenge. Personally, thinking about the long game and the long view has helped me show up when things get very tight and difficult.

I have been able to remind myself, ‘Hey, you’re playing the long game. And when you play the long game, there are going to be challenges along the way. You are committed to this long game.’ This self-talk gives me the ability to not be easily swayed from my focal point of building my business. I’m not as easily interrupted when there’s a challenge.

How to Get Up from a Crash and Burn

I know that I might crash and burn in the beginning. I tell my people, it’s the same thing with sales. If you’ve never made sales before you, you might suck right in the beginning, and that’s okay. This is a normal part of the process. Don’t think that you suck, then immediately give up or throw in the towel. That is too easy. Those who are focused on the long game realize that the process is a marathon and not a sprint. They know and understand that they will have challenges, yet they show up, surpassing the challenges.

Be Wary of Scams and Scammers

Where you find desperation, you find scammers. People are trying to take your money in hopes of a better future or making promises they can’t keep on their end. People have been falling for this shit like crazy because they’re not thinking with the long view. They have what I call ‘band-aid thinking.’ Their self-talk sounds like this: “How do I get a band-aid to solve this massive ass problem right now?” And when you’re thinking from that perspective, people can easily take advantage of you.

When you think about the long view, you are less likely to get scammed. Be more grounded, and you’ll find that you will become more measured. That’s a benefit you achieve when you’re focused on the long game and long-term vision.
